Reclaiming Indigenous Food Traditions and Knowledge
Presenters: Stewart Sutherland and Tim Stevenson
Social and Emotional Wellbeing is an Indigenous concept that encapsulates a whole of life way of looking at the individual, family and community. Indigenous identity is inherent with the land and is shared with us through traditional food activities. The loss of traditional food practices, the sharing of culture and lore, along with other life skills, has left Indigenous communities seeking to reclaim traditional customs including food harvesting. The land is medicine and provides a linkage to our food, our health and our culture.
The food and medicines harvested from the land have nutritional and health benefits. Consequently, our research indicates that traditional harvesting should continue, and be encouraged. As such, this work has led to a range of recommendations in relation to future research in the area of food security, sovereignty and harvesting, including cultural knowledge exchange and acquisition. It is theorized that traditional food and medicine activities will strengthen the cultural foundations of communities providing a protective element as well as supporting a healthier environment.
This webinar will share research on traditional food practices and social emotional wellbeing and provide discussion on community based solutions towards food sovereignty.
